Nissan Presents the Future:Today

Future_today

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

In keeping with its commitment to innovation, Nissan is launching a pioneering exhibition in celebration of its award-winning LEAF electric vehicle. Called FUTURE:TODAY, the interactive exhibition will showcase the work of some of the biggest names from the worlds of arts, design, architecture, technology and engineering.

FUTURE:TODAY will be housed in an innovative structure located at Stockholm's iconic Norrmalmstorg. Designed by internationally renowned architects Jump Studios (Google Campus, Red Bull HQ), the exterior walls form a stunning, color-intense LED light sculpture conceived by London-based design studio Hellicar & Lewis (previous work includes projects commissioned for London's Tate Modern gallery and Coca-Cola). The interactive walls will track the movements of passers-by, intelligently changing color and intensity to create a mesmerizing, ever-evolving piece of art.

The exhibition is a fully immersive experience, which will provide a rare glimpse into what the future could look like. Over two floors, visitors to the exhibition will be able to interact with content created by high profile partners including TEDxCity2.0, light artist Chris Levine (whose work has been exhibited in New York's Museum of Modern Art and London's National Portrait Gallery), Masdar City in the UAE and Nissan itself, giving the residents of Stockholm a rare insight into their home city. Nissan's contribution will focus on future innovation - showcasing its game-changing zero-emission Nissan LEAF.

The Future:Today exhibition takes place at Norrmalmstorg, Norrmalm, Stockholm from November 8-14. Opportunities to interview Chris Levine, Hellicar & Lewis and Jump Studios are available.

Notes to editors:

The FUTURE:TODAY exhibition will consist of 7 key areas:

1. Your City of the Future - insights into your city today and bringing to life ideas on how we will live, play and move in the future.

2. Global Cities of the Future - showcasing expert ideas on creating future cities and communities - with a focus on sustainable design and technology. In conjunction with MASDAR, FUTURE:TODAY also showcases a city of the future being built today.

3. Touch screen interface - find out more about the LEAF's specifications, search for a dealer, request more information, reserve an extended test drive and book a Nissan LEAF shuttle to take you to your next destination.

4. A floor-to-ceiling LED wall featuring:

  • Motorshow videos
  • TED talks
  • Product presentations
  • In-car videos from LEAFs out on test drives

5. Ideas of the Future - in conjunction with TED's City 2.0, six projects will be showcased along with four winning ideas from this year's TED Prize. Visitors will be asked to vote for their favorite idea, directly contributing to the city of tomorrow.

6. The Tank - a cutting edge light and audio installation designed by Oxford-based artist Chris Levine.

7. Outdoor activity - LEAF test drives.

Nissan's Air-Leak Detection Squad Saves Energy, Money, and Helps the Environment

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Nissan's manufacturing facilities in North America are making major changes to reduce the amount of energy they use. They have committed to reduce their overall energy consumption by 25 percent in ten years. It is a move meant to help the environment.

So how is the company reducing their carbon footprint? They have deployed an air-leak detection squad of sorts. These are employees at each plant whose only job is to find and fix wasted compressed air. That is one of the greatest forms of wasted energy at the plants, even above electricity.

"In fact, it is one of our most costly utilities. We have nine large compressors that supply us with compressed air here at our plant in Smyrna," said Jason Watkins, Nissan safety coordinator.

Compressed air keeps the presses running in stamping. It's used to apply paint and also powers various tools used in the manufacturing process. There literally are miles of hose throughout the plant that carry compressed air to thousands of devices. And along the way air leaks often occur, which can result in as much as twenty to thirty percent of leaked compressed air.

The team's key weapon in this fight is an air-leak detection tool. The device is essentially a high powered microphone that senses and transforms inaudible sounds from compressed air leaks into ones an operator can hear with headphones, and read in decibel levels. Smyrna just expanded their air leak detection program to their Trim and Chassis department. And at this rate they'll keep expanding in the name of energy efficiency.

"When this tool is used effectively it could help us achieve that 25 percent reduction within 10 years," said Watkins. "Now we are looking at communicating with our truck system and getting it used there as well."

According to Nissan, since they started this compressed air leak repair program in North America last year, their plants have located and repaired more than 3,500 air leaks. The savings of compressed air was equivalent to about 8,000 tons of CO2 emissions spared.
