Nissan Future Designs Influenced by 2013 Altima, Hi-Cross Concept
Though Nissan has relied on CVTs to bring its green quotient up, the Japanese automaker is also counting on design to get its cars sipping less fuel, focusing primarily on cutting vehicle weight, improving aerodynamics, and reducing engine and transmission friction. Along with expected debut dates for each Nissan car, take a look at the automaker’s potential future below.
Nissan Cars
Godzilla may produce offspring, as the report says Nissan is planning an “undetermined” number of GT-R variations to arrive sometime between 2014 and 2016. Before that happens, though, Nissan’s next 370Z will arrive in 2014 as a 2015 model, with a leaner body, and perhaps a smaller front-drive sibling dubbed the Mini Z. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the affordable Versa hatchback will arrive next spring as a 2013 model with bolder and sportier styling, including a more angular front end and more sharply raked roofline at the rear.
The Maxima will see changes similar to those made to the 2013 Altima, which is lighter and more fuel-efficient than its predecessor. Expect to see the redesigned Maxima in 2014 or 2015. Those who have been waiting for the Nissan Leaf to drop in price may be in luck, as the price will be changed for the better as a result of moving production from Japan to Smyrna, Tennessee. Instead of a redesign, the main focus for the Leaf is extending battery range so green-conscious shoppers can have more confidence in an all-electric car without having to suffer from range anxiety.
Nissan Trucks/SUVs
Just like how families’ needs have changed, so has the Pathfinder. With about two more months to go until it arrives in showrooms, the Pathfinder has softened up its appearance while still maintaining its off-road prowess. Ditching the body-on-frame construction for a unibody structure will help it achieve better fuel economy, with estimates reaching for 20/26 mpg city/highway. Its 3.5-liter V-6 replaces the outgoing SUV’s 4.0-liter, with which it will be paired with an updated CVT. Changes for Nissan’s smaller off-roader, the X-Terra, won’t be as drastic, with a reskin scheduled for 2014. Don’t expect major changes for the Juke either, though a refresh is set for 2014, and the hot-rodded Juke-R continues limited production on a built-to-order basis.
The popular-selling Rogue already has a winning formula, but Nissan hopes to improve it by incorporating styling cues found on the Hi-Cross concept, which debuted at the Geneva show earlier this year, in the new car’s design. Though powertrain specifics haven’t been revealed, it’s possible the revised crossover will use something similar to the concept’s hybrid drivetrain coupled to a direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine when it debuts in 2014. The third-generation Murano, on the other hand, will arrive one year later in 2015. New sheetmetal is in store for the Frontier, which is scheduled to arrive in 2014. The new skin, designed with aerodynamics in mind, will help it achieve more mpgs, while production moves to Canton, Mississippi.
As for full-size Titan pickup and Armada SUV, both are on the same schedule, though it’s unclear when we’ll see the new versions. The Titan’s redesign, scheduled for 2014, is being dragged out as a result of the strain put on engineering resources by the 2011 Japan earthquake. Automotive News reports Nissan is considering offering different variations of the full-size truck, including a regular cab body style. That would be a first for Nissan, and offering the truck with a smaller-displacement engine option along the lines of the F-150 EcoBoost is also a possibility.

2013 Nissan Leaf will go 25% further, could cost a lot less
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
Months ago, we heard that the U.S. version of the 2013 Nissan Leaf would go farther per charge in cold weather thanks to a better heater. This was about the Leaf that will be made in Smyrna, Tennessee starting later this year. A new report on Inside EVs (based on the Japanese language Sankei Biz site) says that the new Leaf, at least the version destined for sale in Japan, will have its range extended to over 250 kilometers (155 miles) in any weather.Of course, since that is on the lenient Japanese test cycle, it doesn't mean that U.S. drivers will get double their range (the Leaf is rated at 73 miles by the EPA). Instead, the new Leaf should get a range improvement of around 25 percent, which would translate to around 91 miles of EPA range, thanks to more efficient motors and better batteries.
More interesting – since we expect incremental improvements with each generation of vehicles, especially when EVs are concerned – is that Nissan is also considering an entry-level Leaf for release by the end of the year. If Sankei Biz is correct, this model would start at 2.5 million yen ($31,500 USD at today's exchange rates) compared to the current version's starting price of 3.7 million yen ($46,600). Inside EVs notes that, "A similar price reduction in North America would price this new base Nissan LEAF at $26,600." Sankei Biz says the updates are coming a year earlier than planned in order to boost sales. A before-incentive price of $26,600 would certainly do that, wouldn't it?
We've asked Nissan for any sort of confirmation or denial of these reports and will update once we hear something.

Hard Core Nissan GT-R, 370Z Nismo RS Models Hinted by Exec
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
At last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Nismo teased things to come with a Juke Nismo Concept model, and an electric Leaf Nismo model. It appears the performance division of Nissan is going full speed ahead with new Nismo performance models, including more extreme RS versions.First to arrive on the scene is the previously mentioned and seen Juke Nismo model. While it’s certainly not as cool as the Juke R, it gives the funky crossover some flavor at a much more affordable price. According to Andy Palmer, executive vice president of Nissan, the Nismo variant models will get a 15-percent increase in power with a focus on distinct styling featuring red accents. And of course, suspension and steering will also be fine-tuned so drivers can take advantage of the additional horsepower.
So according to Palmer, the Juke Nismo model should have around 215-hp from its 1.6-liter turbocharged power plant. But after the Juke model hits the market, up next will be the Leaf that could see around 125-hp. And instead of red accents, the Leaf will sport blue ones.
What’s most important to us is the fact that the GT-R will be getting a Nismo variant to accompany the already popular Nismo 370Z. What’s even better though is that more extreme RS models will be made for those really wanting extreme performance.
“The RS cars will be much more track-focused. You’ve seen the Juke R, so maybe that would be a good place to start,” Palmer said.
Of course Palmer wouldn’t confirm that a GT-R RS and 370Z RS would be hitting the streets anytime soon, but we would be very surprised if Nissan’s flagship sports cars didn’t receive the treatment. The next-generation 370Z in 2014 could see the Nismo 370Z RS model.

Nissan Launches Reinvented 2013 Pathfinder – More Style, Comfort, Room, Innovation and Best-in-Class Fuel Economy
The all-new vehicle design sheds 500 pounds of mass compared to the outgoing model yet maintains the Pathfinder's SUV-ruggedness while delivering up to 26 miles per gallon on the highway. With its blend of capability, including class-leading standard towing capacity of 5000 pounds, and modern amenities, such as a class-exclusive Around View™ Monitor, the 2013 Pathfinder is the next-generation SUV.
"Unveiling our next-generation Pathfinder is a major follow-up to the introduction of the all-new Altima sedan," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. "With its bold new design, best-in-class fuel economy and family adventure capabilities, our dealers can't wait to share this new model with customers in their showrooms."
The 2013 Pathfinder's fuel economy has improved more than 30 percent over that of the 2012 Pathfinder. Both the FWD and 4WD 2013 Pathfinder models lead their segments in fuel economy across the board.
City, highway and combined average fuel economy numbers are 20 (City), 26 (Highway) and 22 (Combined) mpg for the FWD version and 19 (City), 25 (Highway) and 21 (Combined) mpg for the 4WD version. This significant increase over both the outgoing model's fuel economy as well as that of the competition was achieved primarily through a new, aerodynamic vehicle design, 500 pounds of weight reduction, reduced engine friction and the application of a class-exclusive, next generation Xtronic CVT®.
Also playing a significant role in the Pathfinder's excellent fuel economy is the fact that it is now one of the lightest vehicles in its segment, with the FWD model tipping the scales at a mere 4149 pounds. Even the 4WD Pathfinder weighs only 4290 pounds.
Nissan teased the new Pathfinder earlier this year, showing a concept exterior design model in January. Today marks the first official look at the production model, which goes on sale nationwide this fall.
