Nissan LEAF to Reverse into the Record Books
In theory, it goes just as fast backwards as it does forwards. And now comes the proof.
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed (June 29 – July 1), the 100% electric Nissan LEAF will attempt to complete the famous 1.16-mile Goodwood hillclimb course as fast as possible... but in reverse, setting a new Guinness World Record for the fastest time over a distance of one mile in reverse.
With direct drive from the electric motor to its wheels, the Nissan LEAF going backwards should be able to hit the same top speed it manages going forwards. With its batteries located under the floor of the car, it has a low center of gravity making the car very stable at speed with little body roll under cornering. And with fewer moving parts than a conventional car, there's less likelihood of mechanical issues thwarting the attempt.
The attempt is part of Nissan's ambitious social media-driven campaign, The Big Turn On, which is spreading the EV message across Europe. The campaign aims to prove that as well as being environmentally friendly, the Nissan LEAF is safe, economical to run, practical, and fun to drive.
Professional stunt driver Terry Grant will attempt the LEAF Reverse Record. Terry thrilled the crowds at the 2011 Festival of Speed by driving a Nissan JUKE up the hillclimb course on two wheels.
"The LEAF Reverse Record isn't going to be easy and will be very challenging," admitted Terry. "I'd prefer to do it on a nice straight and level strip of tarmac rather than on Lord March's drive. The hill not only climbs, but is also full of twists, turns and obstacles.
"It's a hugely technical test of speed and concentration. But despite the risks, the strength and integrity of Nissan LEAF's design gives me confidence. Whatever happens, I know I'm going to finish the weekend with a serious crick in my neck!"
One of the other Nissan stars of the FoS weekend will be the dramatic race-prepared Nissan LEAF NISMO RC. It will be racing against the clock, to set a hill record for electric vehicles. It will be driven by 2011 FIA GT1 Championship winning driver, Michael Krumm, who wowed the huge crowd at this year's Le Mans 24 Hours from behind the wheel of the startling Nissan DeltaWing endurance racing car.

Renault-Nissan Alliance & United Nations Partner for Zero-Emission Mobility at Rio+20
A fleet of electric vehicles from the Renault-Nissan Alliance is shuttling United Nations delegates at its Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, the world's largest environmental summit.
The conference, which runs from June 13-22, marks the first time the UN will use a dedicated zero-emission car fleet for shuttling its delegates.
More than 50,000 delegates, including 400 from the UN, are expected to attend the summit -- nicknamed "Rio+20" -- to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the United Nations' Earth Summit in Rio, where countries agreed to a blueprint for economic growth, social equity and environmental protection.
"One important subject of Rio+20 is the 'sustainable city,' and zero-emission vehicles can be an integral part ensuring quality of life in urban areas," said Kathleen Adballa, Chief of the organization and logistics of Rio+20 at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. "We are glad to have zero-emission vehicles added to our fleet. In this way, we can see and demonstrate how EVs can reduce noise pollution and eliminate tailpipe emissions. In Brazil, where most electricity is generated from renewable and local sources, electric vehicles are an excellent low carbon transport option."

GT Academy Champ Heitkotter Takes Big Leap in Mission to Become Pro Racer
The dream of becoming a professional race car driver looks more attainable for 2011 GT Academy USA champion Bryan Heitkotter after he qualified the Nissan Motorsports – GT Academy 370Z on the pole in for last weekend's Continental Tire Challenge Series race.
After stumbling slightly at the start of the race, Heitkotter ran the next 38 laps steadily in fourth position in a very competitive field throughout the first half of the enduro. Adversity hit the team during the first pit stop. "The car in the pit stall behind us was forward in his box and I missed our (pit) box by a bit, had to be pushed back, and then there was trouble getting the right rear tire changed," he said.
The car came back on the track in 19th position, and during a subsequent caution period Heitkotter turned the car over to veteran co-driver B.J. Zacharias. B.J. stormed back through the field, working all the way up to eighth position as time expired. Zacharias said, "It was a solid top ten, but we had a top five car. We were really good on the longer runs – it's just that there were so many cautions it was hard to come all the way back."
"Although we would have liked to get a top five finish, I can't say enough about how well Doran racing has prepared this car and what a professional job Bryan and BJ did in driving it hard all weekend," said Ron Stukenberg, Sr. Manager, Nissan Motorsports. "We took away a lot of positives from this weekend, and we can learn good things from this experience."
In qualifying Heitkotter blistered the rolling 2.25-mile Mid Ohio course in 1:32.422 for an average of 88 mph on his final qualifying pass. Even with the good result he knew the car could be even faster. "I'm really shocked to win the pole," said Heitkotter, who earned his ride by winning the first GT Academy in 2011, emerging from a group of 53,000 hopefuls in online Gran Turismo 5 competition. "We've been chasing the handling since we got here. We're close on the setup, but I was surprised when they told me over the radio that we got P-1. "
"I got here because of the Gran Turismo Academy. We had a one-week shootout in Silverstone, driving real cars, and I was the winner. My prize was a drive for Nissan. This is a total dream come true. I've always wanted to race, but never had the opportunity to do it. I knew when they announced it that this would be my one shot to make it in racing, and I gave it everything I had. I didn't expect to win, but I knew if I didn't try I'd be kicking myself forever. This a great launching pad for me into professional racing."
GT Academy online competition officially ends on Sunday, June 24
In July, the National Final Event will bring together the top 32 players from the US, with the top 16 players advancing to the Final Selection Round. This all-important stage will be held at Silverstone Circuit in August. There, the Final Selection Committee—which is comprised of the world's top driving trainers, including former F1 pilot Johnny Herbert—will judge the finalists over several days by testing not only their driving skills, but also their physical fitness and mental toughness.
Only one person will be left standing. The Final Selection Committee will declare an overall winner, who will then be sent back to the UK to participate in a special, five-month "Driver's Training Program", which includes several wheel-to-wheel racing events. After successfully completing this training, the "chosen one" will make his or her international debut as a professional racecar driver.

Usain Bolt and Nissan GT-R Team up for New Marketing Campaign
Three time Olympic Gold Medal sprinter Usain Bolt and Nissan Motor Co. have joined forces for a new marketing campaign. Dubbed “WHAT IF” the campaign is designed to tantalize the senses, highlighting Nissan’s vehicles and technologies designed to “excite,” such as the GT-R supercar.
According to Bolt, the partnership seemed logical, since as the world’s fastest man, he already owns one of the world’s fastest cars – a Nissan GT-R. “The Nissan GT-R is a wonderful car and perfect for me. I love everything in it. I enjoy driving it, and I feel completely safe, and that is the key thing for me,” he said.
The new campaign is the first to emerge from Nissan’s new global marketing arm, that was given a brief last year to develop programs that accelerate Nissan brand awareness, as part of the firm’s Power 88 business plan.
“WHAT IF” will initially be visible at major international airports worldwide from June 1, with the goal of lasting several years, via continuously refreshed content. Nissan says that the campaign will also feature prominently online with shareable social media content and more in depth stories and features.

Hey Fans! Beach Season is upon us, look your best this summer!
Getting in Shape for Swim Season
Look your best this summer.
Here are some tips from the experts at the Mayo Clinic on the best ways to slim down for swimsuit season:
Pick a plan that works for you
There are dozens of diet plans out there, so do your homework. Make sure the plan you choose is a healthy one that includes all the major food groups, doesn’t deprive you of the foods you like and fits your lifestyle. If you’re not sure whether a plan is right for you or have questions about how many calories and other nutrients you need while losing weight, talk to your doctor.
Mind your portions
Portion control is key to losing weight, so it’s important to learn appropriate serving sizes. For example:
- A 3-oz. serving of fish is the size of a deck of cards
- A half-cup serving of pasta or dry cereal is the size of a hockey puck
- A half-cup serving of fresh fruit is the size of a tennis ball
- A 1-teaspoon serving of butter is the size of a die
Add exercise
You can lose weight through diet changes alone, but you’ll see faster results — and a shapelier body — if you add exercise. It’s important to make your goals realistic and attainable. You might not be a natural athlete, but if you experiment with various sports and activities you’re certain to find something you enjoy. You might join your company softball league, sign up for an adult ballet class or walk with your family after dinner each night. The important thing is to move regularly.
If it’s difficult for you to find time to exercise, then it’s time to get resourceful. You might slip in a few walking breaks during the workday, work out while watching TV or squeeze in a little extra exercise by taking the stairs and parking farther away from your destination while running errands. Every little bit counts.
Keep your eye on the goal
With most diet and exercise programs, you can expect to lose about one to two pounds a week. There are times along the way when your weight loss will stall because you’ve slipped up, had a busy week, gone on vacation — or seemingly for no reason at all. It’s a frustrating but ultimately rewarding journey. The key is making small, sustainable changes you can stick with over the long haul, until you reach your goal.
