Nissan, GE to Showcase Future Smart Grid with Electric Vehicles at SAE 2012 World Congress
What if you could charge your electric car in under 30 minutes? What if your car could “talk” to your house or directly to the utility to manage electricity and save money? Keeping with the “Get Connected” theme of the SAE 2012 World Congress, Nissan and its strategic partner, GE, will showcase interactive exhibits that demonstrate the integration of electric cars like the Nissan LEAF into the home with the latest Smart Grid technologies.
Other demonstrations will include Nissan’s CHAdeMO-based DC quick charging system and vehicle-to-home, reverse-flow power management with the Nissan LEAF. Nissan’s display will also include the all-new 2013 Altima sedan, which goes on sale this Summer. GE’s display will include its WattStationTM EV charging station; Nucleus Home Energy Manager, which communicates wirelessly with smart devices in the home to monitor household electricity consumption; and Demand Response Management System (DRMS) software, which can be used by utilities to manage electricity loads.
The joining of Nissan and GE for the exhibit and partnership in the 2012 World Congress illustrates the dramatic changes underway in the automotive world. As the Internet moves from consumers to industry and automobiles embrace alternative fuels and electric transportation, new connections are being made across industry sectors to facilitate this transformation. GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt will deliver the opening keynote address at the World Congress. The title of his address is "Moving an Industry, Powering our Future." His address will focus on the challenges and opportunities with building a more efficient and productive world and how solutions like alternative fuels and electric vehicles, can help bring about this movement.
“As a global leader in the development and sale of electric vehicles, we know that it is crucial to collaborate with companies like GE to expand the use of this technology and to open doors to more consumers,” said Carla Bailo, senior vice president, Research and Development, Nissan Americas. “The innovations you will see in the Nissan/GE display at 2012 SAE World Congress demonstrate what happens when two industry leaders ‘Get Connected’ to benefit our customers.”
“The Nissan/GE booth will demonstrate what smart, sustainable living will look like in the future,” said Mark Little, Senior Vice President and Director, GE Global Research. “Visit our booth and you will see firsthand how smart connections between the grid, the home and the car can help us improve the way energy is managed and consumed.”
The Nissan/GE booth will demonstrate some of the most far-reaching technical capabilities yet of the future Smart Grid and home, including:
- The EV communicating directly with the utility or with the home energy manager to help manage electricity consumption;
- The EV acting as a back-up power source in the event of a power outage;
- Time-of-Use demand response scenarios where devices in the home like the refrigerator, washer/dryer and EV charger react to changes in the prices of electricity based upon the time of day.
The booth demonstration builds on the existing R&D agreement that Nissan and GE have in place on smart charging. GE and Nissan have two key areas where they are focusing their research efforts. The first relates to the integration of electric vehicles with homes and buildings. The second looks at electric vehicle charging dynamics and the future impact on the grid once millions of electric cars are on the road.

Nissan DeltaWing Development Film Series Kicks Off
With European testing due to kick off next week for the Nissan DeltaWing, a new online film series highlighting the development of the revolutionary Le Mans 24 Hours entry was launched today.
Commissioned by Nissan and hosted at the Nissan in Europe YouTube page, the multi-part series will highlight different aspects of the car's development and show the challenges of getting such an innovative project to its current stage and the huge task the team faces to finish the Le Mans 24 hours.
As it did with its similarly innovative Juke-R project, Nissan is breaking new ground in the way it makes the development process behind its highest-profile campaigns as accessible as possible.
New episodes of the film series will be launched roughly every two weeks between now and Le Mans and will culminate in a TV documentary, which will air after the endurance classic in June.
A Nissan film crew has followed the development of the unique racer, filming every move of Nissan DeltaWing designer Ben Bowlby and his engineering team as they have built the car, as well as recording how Nissan's 1.6-liter DIG-T engine has been developed to be the ideal partner engine for the project.
When the car races at Le Mans it will be thanks to a number of key partners in the project. In addition to Nissan and Bowlby, project managing partner Don Panoz has been key to the car's development, Dan Gurney and his All-American Racers organization has built the prototype car in California and Duncan Dayton's Highcroft Racing outfit and Michelin have also been heavily involved.
The first video in the series highlights the wind tunnel work on the car, carried out at the Windshear facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Ben Bowlby said: "We've had the Nissan film crew following our every move throughout the development of the car over the past few months and this will give the fans a great insight into the creation of the Nissan DeltaWing.
"It was a bit strange at first to have a camera poked under our nose all the time but, after a while, the guys really felt like part of the team.
"The finished product will be brilliant for the fans to get to see what goes on behind the scenes in the creation a project as unique as the Nissan DeltaWing.
"The wind tunnel work in particular was a key component of the project. The data we had from the scale model development and what our computer simulations told us showed we were moving in the right direction.
"Getting the full-sized car in the wind tunnel really cemented that. In fact, the final results actually exceeded our expectations."
Darren Cox, General Manager, Nissan in Europe, said: "As soon as Nissan's involvement with the DeltaWing project began and long before it was announced, we wanted to make sure that the challenge of bringing such a revolutionary car to the race track was properly recorded.
"This is an innovative project that could change the face of motorsport and the fans should be shown the full story. Too often motorsport development is hidden away and kept secret. Nissan want to make this exciting part of the sport accessible. These films will give some insight into the very steep learning curve the team faces to even get to the Le Mans 24 Hours."

2013 Nissan Altima Debut Heralds Class-Leading 38 MPG
The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima made its world debut at the New York International Auto Show to a standing room only crowd of media during opening press day. Soon, headlines would feature news of Nissan's stylish, innovative new vehicle offering class-leading fuel efficiency as a stand-out among the crowded and competitive mid-size sedan segment.
"This new Altima builds on the fundamental reputation earned over four generations for quality and reliability -- and adds class-leading levels of value, innovation, dynamic performance and premium style," said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.
Among the 2013 Altima's many attributes are a targeted best-in-segment fuel economy of 38 mpg highway (2.5-liter engine), new premium exterior styling with a strong presence and excellent aerodynamics, an upscale interior with premium materials, and an outstanding balance of ride comfort, stability and a fun-to-drive demeanor with projected best-level acceleration.
The 2011 calendar year was the sixth consecutive year of market share gains for Nissan in the U.S., with the Altima ranking as the second best-selling car in the U.S. The Altima goes on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in June at a starting MSRP of $21,500.
