Nissan Reveals Juke Nismo Concept in Tokyo

Lower, faster and visually even more dramatic, Nismo know-how redefines the Nissan Juke
  • Nissan Juke Nismo Concept gives first glimpse of Nismo's future
  • Purpose-designed body kit enhances looks and aerodynamic efficiency
  • More power from tuned engine
  • Stiffer chassis and larger tyres for even better handling
  • Distinctive sporting interior treatment
  • Finished in Nismo signature colours

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd will reveal a bold new future for its Nismo performance arm. One of the undoubted stars of the Tokyo Motor Show will be the Nissan Juke Nismo, an idea of how a premium sports version of the hugely successful compact crossover could look.

Nissan
With its distinctive styling Nissan Juke has redefined the highly competitive B-segment, but the Juke Nismo Concept is even more dramatic. It's lower, wider and has a tougher stance. Even standing still, it's clearly a performance car.

Aimed at a car-loving audience looking for a car that reflects an edgy personality, Juke Nismo Concept magnifies the standard car's unique mix of compact car agility, coupé-like responses and SUV strength.

"The global sales success of Nissan Juke has proved beyond doubt that customers are looking for something different," said Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. "The Juke Nismo Concept takes that idea to the next level. It's energetic, distinctive and highly desirable."

Finished in signature Nismo colours of pearl white with red highlights, the Juke Nismo Concept wears a body kit created by Nismo's aerodynamic specialists whose skill has been honed perfecting racecar bodywork.

And as on a racecar, the Juke Nismo Concept body kit is designed not just to look good, but also to be dynamically highly efficient. New parts include revised lower bumpers front and rear, wider fenders and sill side skirts.

The grille pattern has been changed while the tailgate spoiler has been modified by the addition of side elements to control airflow more efficiently. Even the shape of the door mirrors has been altered to enhance the car's aerodynamic performance and reduce front and rear lift without increasing drag.

This reduction in lift means the contact patch of the tyres has been increased to improve grip, which is further enhanced by the arrival of stylish new 19-inch alloy wheels.

Naturally the Nismo treatment extends to the chassis which has been lowered and stiffened using proprietary parts of the sort that will be available from the expanded Nismo's parts catalogue, while the 1.6-litre direct injection turbo gasoline engine has been uprated to deliver more power and performance.

And Nismo touches can also be found in the interior of the Concept, where parts that interact with the driver's sense of sight, sound, look and feel - such as the steering wheel, pedals, gauges, shifter knob and door trims - have been redesigned to provide greater involvement when driving. Further underlining the performance aspects of the car, special leather-trimmed bucket seats have been added while the importance of the tachometer means the dial and needle are illuminated in red.

A feeling of enhanced sporting quality in the cockpit can be attributed to a matt effect applied to previously reflective surfaces, while the dramatic centre console - shaped to resemble a motorcycle fuel tank - has been given a metallic coating to enhance the purposeful feeling of the Concept.

"As the Concept shows, Nismo brings new levels of individuality to mainstream Nissan cars like Juke. The future for Nismo is to develop premium sports designs for an ever-widening range of customers," said Nismo President, Shoichi Miyatani.

"Our forthcoming range of cars will be just as accessible and innovative as every Nissan product, but with added Nismo energy they will be even more fun to own and drive," he added.

Nissan Provides More Efficient, Lower Cost Recharging Solution for Electric Vehicles

To provide a low-cost, high-quality charging solution for faster EV “refills,” Nissan and Sumitomo are collaborating to launch a new EV quick charger for the U.S. market. And not only will the innovative quick charger cost about one third the price of traditional units, but it also will be able to support all plug-in vehicles capable of quick charging on the increasingly-used CHAdeMO standard—including the Nissan LEAF. The only 100 percent electric car designed for the mass market, the LEAF can be refilled from a fully depleted state to an 80 percent charge in less than 30 minutes using this new charger.

The Nissan/Sumitomo charging system was designed primarily for fleet and commercial applications—including public charging points, rental fleets, corporate and educational campuses, and even shopping malls—and it will be available in two different configurations: One specifically for outdoor use, one for indoor locations.

Other fast facts about the quick charger:

  • Online ordering begins in January 2012.
  • The starting price for the unit is $9,995.
  • The charger runs on a 480-volt current.
  • AeroVironment, already Nissan’s home-charging partners, will handle both wholesale and retail distribution, and will also be the preferred provider for U.S. installation services.

“This charger is the first of its kind, and it’s truly revolutionary,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Nissan North America. “A low-cost DC quick charger unlocks the potential for unprecedented electric vehicle use and adoption. We anticipate thousands of these chargers will be installed across the country, enabling electric cars like the Nissan LEAF to be driven for even greater distances and durations.”

Nissan Continues to Squeeze Even More Power Out of the GT-R

Nissan is again showing off its commitment to continuous improvement with its flagship sports car—especially when it comes to continuously improving the Nissan GT-R’s power output.

2012-nissan-gt-r_2
Consider: For the 2011 model year, Nissan’s supercar was able to squeeze 485 hp and 448 lb.-ft. from its technologically advanced twin-turbo V6. But just one year later, the automaker’s engineers were able to find even more power lurking inside that engine and tuned up the 2012 GT-R for 530 hp and 448 lb.-ft. of torque. And they’ve done it again for the 2013 model, which will be capable of a pavement-pulverizing 545 horse and 463 lb.-ft. of twist.

This time around, the upgrades come primarily via refinements to the GT-R’s engine breathing, resulting in enhanced intake and exhaust-emissions efficiency, reduced air-flow resistance, and improved engine control. Then, to ensure the car maintains its reputation for all-around performance—witness its record-setting exploits on the Nürburgring—Nissan also retuned the GT-R’s suspension and improved its shift feel.

The automaker fine-tuned the GT-R lineup as well, introducing a handmade dry-carbon rear spoiler for the Black Edition, adding a standard rear-view monitor to all models and debuting a new, blue lighting treatment for the inside of the tach ring. The latter now matches the look of the shift-position indicator light, subtly adding to the sophisticated appearance of the GT-R’s cabin.

“The 2013 Nissan GT-R once again sends a bold statement that it remains on the leading edge of international sports car design, technology and performance,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. “It’s our desire to keep pushing the envelope, to never settle for second best or second place—a philosophy that makes Nissan GT-R one of the most coveted and affordable supercars in the world today.”

The 2013 Nissan GT-R is slated to go on sale at select Nissan dealerships in January of 2012.

SunPower Charges Up the Nissan LEAF

In a collaboration announced today, Nissan North America Inc. (NNA) and SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWRA, SPWRB) will team up to help Nissan LEAF electric vehicle owners learn how a residential solar power system from SunPower can reduce their carbon emissions and control the cost of charging their electric vehicles.

Nissan_leaf_large

The two companies are offering new online content, including a video tutorial that describes how solar power systems convert sunlight into clean, renewable power for use in the home and for charging electric vehicles. Visitors to the site will be able to request a free home solar assessment from a local SunPower dealer.

“Nissan LEAF owners are conscientious about their energy use, and it makes sense for them to understand how they can offset the power that their all-electric LEAF requires with clean, renewable solar power generated from their own rooftop,” said Brendan Jones, director, Nissan LEAF marketing and sales strategy, NNA. “SunPower is the leading manufacturer and installer of residential solar power systems in the United States, and offers the most efficient solar power technology on the market today. For example, a 2.5-kilowatt SunPower rooftop solar system may offset the power required to drive a LEAF about 10,000 miles a year. We are pleased to work with SunPower on this initiative, and look forward to a long partnership.”

“Solar power is a reliable, cost-effective technology for homeowners today,” said SunPower President and CEO Tom Werner. “High efficiency SunPower systems are guaranteed to perform over the long term, maximizing the power generated and the monthly savings. I power my own 100 percent electric Nissan LEAF with a SunPower system, eliminating trips to the gas station while significantly reducing my electricity bill.”
